Stirling Skills Training offers two options towards accreditation as a Forklift Operator. These are:
- Full training. A one-day program for new operators or those with limited recent experience.
- Recognition of Prior Learning. This is an assessment-only process suitable for very experienced operators who have an expired or obsolete licence. Participants must also have a minimum of 100 hours of recent experience (documentary evidence will be required). Further information about the requirements for Recognition of Prior Learning is available here.
Both of these training programs require that participants successfully complete a written assessment. WorkSafe WA, the Government body responsible for issuing Forklift Licences, requires that all participants complete this assessment and does not allow a verbal test or the use of an interpreter. Further information about the WorkSafe WA requirements is available here.
About the Forklift Learner Resource
We are in the process of updating our learner resources for the Forklift Operator course. All of the learning material required to pass the written assessment component of the course is now delivered at the training session.
We do recommend that participants prepare for the course by studying some of the key safety issues associated with forklift operation.
WorkSafe WA publishes a guide to safe forklift operation, Forklift Safety: Reducing the Risk, which we strongly suggest that participants study before attending the training course. A PDF copy of this guide is available as a free download from the WorkSafe WA website at this address: http://www.commerce.wa.gov.au/WorkSafe/PDF/Guides/Forklift_safety.pdf. We also provide participants with a paper copy of this publication prior to the course date.
Full training
The full training course is run over a whole day and includes a classroom component as well as hands-on training with the forklift. The course numbers are strictly limited to ensure that all participants receive individual attention and support, and plenty of time to practice on the forklift.
The cost for the regular on-site course is $320 per person.
Upon successful completion of the course participants will receive:
- Statement of Attainment
- A copy of their Assessment results
- Documentation required to apply for the WorkSafe National License
Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of Prior Learning is assessment only - no training is provided.
In addition to holding an obsolete or expired forklift ticket, participants must also have a minimum of 100 hours of recent experience. Participants will be required to complete an Evidence Declaration before enrolment will be accepted. Further information about the requirements for Recognition of Prior Learning is available here.
Participants will need to be confident in loading, unloading and driving through an obstacle course.
Assessments are available Monday to Friday by appointment and usually take between 2-3 hours. The cost for the regular on-site course is $160 per person.

Reassessments
Stirling Skills Training offers reduced training and assessment costs for participants who are not successful on their first attempt and wish to be reassessed for the forklift operator licence.
For participants who successfully completed the written assessment, but were assessed "not yet competent" for the practical assessment, the cost of re-doing the practical assessment is $80.
For participants who need to re-do both the written and practical assessment, the reassessment cost is $224. This is a reduction on the normal course fee, which is $320.
In cases where participants are not successful on the first assessment, our trainer will explain the options available and will provide comprehensive feedback on the areas where further work is required so that the participant can prepare for the re-assessment.
WorkSafe licence fee
WorkSafe WA charges a $79 application fee for the National High Risk Work Licence (forklift ticket). This is payable directly to WorkSafe and is not included in our course fee.
Course Requirements
- Be sufficiently fluent in the use of the English language for communication and assessment purposes
- Wear closed in shoes
- Be a minimum of 18 years of age
- Bring photo identification to the course
- Complete a theory and practical assessment
Course schedule
Courses run every week, Monday to Friday, but spaces fill up fast so it's advisable to make your booking as soon as possible.
